Before mentioning the causes for erectile dysfunction, it is important to know what erectile dysfunction is. Male sexual arousal or erection is complex process that takes place within the body involving nervous system, brain, muscles, blood vessels, and emotions. In other words, it can be said that erection involves nervous system; emotional, psychological and stress-related factors; hormonal and vascular factors; and other local factors with the erection bodies or penis itself. Erection occurs in response to touch, smell, and any auditory or visual stimuli that trigger’s pathways in the brain. This information travels from brain to the nerve centre, which is at the base of the spine, where the primary nerve fibre connects to the penis and then regulates the blood flow during erections.

If any of the above mentioned process is disrupted be it physical or psychological process, it causes erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction describes a man’s incapability to achieve and sustain an erection of penis.

Physical Causes for erectile dysfunction are –

  • Parkinson’s disease – it’s a chronic and progressive movement disorder
  • Multiple sclerosis – central nervous system disease that disrupts the flow of information within the brain

Psychological Factors that causes erectile dysfunction

The human brain plays very essential role in triggering the series of physical events that leads to erection of penis, which starts with the feeling of sexual excitement. If the mind is not at peace or is stable it can interfere with sexual feelings and may cause erectile dysfunction. These factors include:

  • Depression, anxiety or other mental health conditions
